Halloween wouldn’t be complete without a spooky and elegant Black Magic Mocktail. It’s the perfect blend of fresh blackberries, sweet pineapple juice, a little orange, and non alcoholic gin.

Best part, this black mocktail is naturally colored and doesn’t use food coloring or activated charcoal.

There’s nothing I love more than a little bit of mocktail magic for Halloween! I’m sure you’re wondering, how did she get it black without black food coloring or activated charcoal?

I use color theory! All we do is combine ingredients that are red, yellow, and blue to make a perfect black mocktail. In this recipe the red comes from our blackberries, yellow from pineapple juice, and blue from blue curacao syrup.

The flavor is earthy and sweet, with a little bit of complexity from the non alcoholic gin. It goes great with my Halloween Monster Cookies, Halloween Candy Brownies, Halloween Hand Pies, or Halloween Snack Mix! For a savory option, I love a mini Pumpkin-Shaped Cheeseball to go with it.

Black Magic Mocktail Ingredients

Here’s the 4 things you will need to make this mocktail, and a few important notes too. Please keep in mind that swapping out any of these ingredients can result in color changes.

  • Fresh Blackberries: For me these are the unofficial fruit of Halloween. They’re spooky, deep, and delicious. Just be sure you wash your berries before using them.
  • Pineapple Juice: Make sure it’s 100%, canned pineapple juice or your mocktail won’t have enough yellow for it to turn black.
  • Blue Curacao Syrup: It tastes like blue curacao (sweet orange) but is in simple syrup form. I use the brand DaVinci.
  • Non Alcoholic Gin: I use Monday Zero Proof Gin. It has bright notes that go well with the pineapple and blackberry, plus it has a juniper note to really boost it.

You will also need a cocktail shaker that has a strainer top, a metal muddler, and don’t forget beautifully spooky glassware. I chose coupe glasses, feel free to use what you like.

How to Make a Black Magic Mocktail

This is just a quick summary, the recipe card at the bottom will have complete instructions.

1. Muddle blackberries until their juices are released. Add the blue curacao syrup, pineapple juice, non alcoholic gin, and optional ice.

2. Shake vigorously and pour into coupe glasses. Garnish with a fresh blackberry (just cut it down the bottom a little and slide it on the lip of your glass) and a sprig of rosemary.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Can I use frozen blackberries instead of fresh?

No, I do not recommend using frozen blackberries in this mocktail. They have a high water content and lack in flavor. But more important, they do not have the color vibrancy to make this mocktail black.
