What Is A Blue Lagoon Drink?

I bet you’re wondering, what is it and where did it come from?

Well, a classic blue lagoon cocktail is made with lemonade, orange juice, and blue curacao liqueur, which is orange flavored. I chose to use lemonade, orange soda, and a non alcoholic simple syrup version of the liqueur. The orange soda is a way better choice than orange juice because it adds a fizzy note that mimics alcohol perfectly.

As for the origin of this drink, apparently a New York bartender invented the blue lagoon back in the 1960’s. Some mixologists agree with this, while others are not convinced because this drink is very popular in tropical countries. Unfortunately, we don’t know definitively where it came from but we can all agree it’s beautifully blue with perfectly balanced flavors.

3 ingredients and 5 minutes to make these delicious no alcohol Blue Lagoon Mocktails.

Blue Lagoon Mocktail Ingredients

This blue mocktail is made with 3 simple ingredients, 4 if you include the garnish. Keep reading for a few important notes.

  • Blue Curacao Simple Syrup: Make sure it’s a syrup (which is non alcoholic) and not liqueur, I use Torani brand. And if you’re wondering it is pronounced as cure-ah-SEW.
  • Orange Sparkling Water: This adds orange flavor and fizz without added sugar. Mine came from Wal-Mart but other popular brands include La Croix, Waterloo, Spindrift, and Sparkling Ice.
  • Lemonade: This is the greatest ingredient (by volume) so make sure it is a good quality lemonade. I prefer Simply lemonade or will make my own by using my State Fair Lemonade recipe.
  • Orange Slices: An optional garnish for your mocktail.

Non Alcoholic Spirits You Can Use To Amp It Up

Non alcoholic spirits are an absolute must if you want to make this mocktail taste like a cocktail. Typically a Blue Lagoon cocktail includes vodka. So, you can add 2 ounces of Arkay NA Vodka or Strykk Not Vodka to beautifully mimic the vodka.

Please note, non alcoholic spirits have trace amounts of alcoholic (0.05% alcohol by volume). Please practice your best judgement when consuming or serving these spirits to others.

Ingredients needed. Blue curacao simple syrup, orange sparkling water, lemonade.

How to Make A Blue Lagoon Mocktail

This blue mocktail is so easy to make! I guarantee you can stir it together quicker than the commercial break on your favorite TV show.

Don’t forget to grab glassware like the highball glass and a long handled spoon or stirrer.

1. To your highball glass, add the blue curacao syrup and orange sparkling water. Lightly stir the two together and fill the glass 3/4 full with ice.

2. Gently pour the lemonade over the orange mixture. Ooh and ahh at the ombre effect then stir, garnish with an orange slice, and serve!

Super Quick Mixology Tips

Here’s a few ways you can make this Blue Lagoon Mocktail work for you!

  1. CHILL THE INGREDIENTS. Doing this means you don’t have to add ice and water down your mocktail.
  2. MAKE YOUR OWN BLUE CURACAO SYRUP. I love this recipe or you can use store-bought orange syrup and add a few drops of blue food coloring to it.
  3. AMP UP THE ORANGE FLAVOR. Swap the sparkling water for freshly squeezed orange juice or an orange soda like Orange Crush.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Can I make this in advance for a party?

No, because you don’t want the orange sparkling water to lose its fizz. The earliest I would make it is 2 to 3 hours prior and I would keep it refrigerated to reduce the loss of carbonation.

This tasted delicious! I was testing recipes for a baby shower we’re throwing, and wanted something blue and this was perfect. I used simple syrup and a few drops of natural food coloring and it tasted just as good! Thanks for that tip!

I make a virgin Blue Hawaiian that my husband always complains is too sweet. This Blue Lagoon has more of an orangy bite which makes him very happy. He and my boys LOVE it!

Your biggest mocktail fan is back! I loved this Blue Lagoon as much as the mojito mocktail! The blue color was super fun. I did use the nonalcoholic vodka as your suggested, which was perfect. I will have to try your cosmopolitan mocktail next. ๐Ÿ™‚
