This Edible Sugar Cookie Dough is easy to make, completely safe to eat, and so addicting! It is buttery, creamy, packed with sprinkles, and tastes exactly like a sugar cookie- thanks to the vanilla and almond extracts.

Make it into chocolate covered truffles, add it to ice cream, or dig in with a spoon. My favorite thing is putting it in tiny cups and adding it to my Christmas cookie boxes. So many festive holiday possibilities with this one!

The holidays are all about cookies! Sugar cookies, gingerbread cookies, blossom cookies, Linzer cookies, the list goes on and on. My favorite part is eating a spoonful of the cookie dough (I know, I know, I could get sick).

Well this year I really don’t have the time or feel like making cookies so I am settling for some Edible Sugar Cookie Dough! It is easy, minimal ingredients, and the same delicious flavor.

For more Christmas cheer you have to make my Snowman Snowball Cookies, Coconut Rice Krispie Treats, or Gingerbread Pie Dip! I also love this Easy Fudge Recipe and Gluten Free Sugar Cookies, all are easy and super cute desserts for holiday entertaining.

A Nostalgic and Classic Treat, Edible Sugar Cookie Dough:

  • TASTE: It is buttery, sweet, with a hint of salt, and rounded out with hints of almond and vanilla. It has the same great taste as a classic sugar cookie! And don’t worry, it is completely safe to eat because it is made without eggs and the flour is heat treated to kill any bacteria.
  • TEXTURE: Literally melts in your mouth. It is smooth, creamy, crunchy bites from the sprinkles, and is never grainy.
  • TIME AND EASE: It is done and ready to eat in 10 minutes! Just cream together your butter and sugar, add in the wet ingredients, fold in the dry ingredients and sprinkles. This is a great activity to do with loved ones or kids!

Edible Sugar Cookie Dough Ingredients and Substitutions

This recipe is 8 simple ingredients. I guarantee you have them in your kitchen as we speak. This Edible Sugar Cookie Dough can easily be made vegan, gluten free, and even sugar free.

Below are the ingredients and how you can substitute them to fit your dietary needs. Don’t forget to grab your hand mixer too!

  • All- Purpose Flour: The flour will be heat treated to fill any potentially harmful bacteria. 1:1 gluten free flour works great too.
  • Unsalted Butter: Be sure it is softened it to room temperature or you’ll have a hard time mixing up your cookie dough. Feel free to use plant butter or margarine.
  • Granulated Sugar: A classic sugar cookie only contains granulated sugar so that is what we will use. You can substitute this for raw cane sugar or sugar free sweeteners.
  • Milk: Any type of milk works in this recipe; whole milk, nut milk, plant milk, etc. Just remember the higher the fat content the creamier your edible cookie dough will be. Whole milk is the creamiest while nut milks would be less creamy.
  • Extracts: We will use vanilla and almond, I recommend using both to get a true sugar flavor.
  • Salt: This helps to balance out the sweetness level.
  • Sprinkles: I used red, green, and white sprinkles for Christmas. Feel free to use any you’d like. I like this mix of 6 different sprinkles from Wilton.
Ingredients. Unsalted butter, granulated sugar, heat treated flour, milk, vanilla extract, almond extract, salt and sprinkles.

How to Make Homemade Edible Sugar Cookie Dough

This is a quick overview of how to make Edible Sugar Cookie Dough at home. The recipe card below will have all the details and instructions.

  1. Heat treat the flour in the microwave or oven to kill any bacteria.
  2. Cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy, pale, and the sugar has dissolved.
  3. Add in and combine the remaining wet ingredients until smooth.
  4. Add and fold in the dry ingredients and sprinkles until everything is well combined.
  5. Serve and enjoy! I have a few fun ideas below.

Storing Information:

You always want to store Edible Sugar Cookie Dough in the refrigerator or freezer in an airtight container. You can keep all in one lump, divide it into small condiment containers, or roll it into single serve sized balls.

In the refrigerator it will keep up to 5 days and in the freezer up to 1 month. Leave it to sit out at room temperature to soften for 15 to 30 minutes before eating it.

3 Extra Recipe Tips:

  1. Adjust the amounts of milk or flour to get the perfect consistency. If your dough seems too crumbly add a bit more milk, one teaspoon at a time. If your dough is too wet add more flour, one tablespoon at a time.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar very well to reduce the graininess. As butter and sugar gets whipped together the sugar dissolves into the butter creating a fluffy, smooth mixture.
  3. Make the amount you want. Cut this recipe in half to make single serve Edible Sugar Cookie Dough. You can even double or triple this recipe if you have bigger plans for it (I include some fun ideas below)!

Edible Cookie Dough Variations

If you want to add more than sprinkles or are not a fan of sprinkles, here are some suggestions:

  • chocolate chips- white, semi-sweet, milk, butterscotch, peanut butter, dark chocolate
  • nuts- pecans, almonds, peanuts
  • cookies- Oreos, shortbread, gingersnaps, wafers, biscoff cookies
  • spices- cinnamon, chai, nutmeg, vanilla bean
  • caramel or toffee bits
  • crushed candy cane
  • pretzels
  • chopped candy bars- peanut butter cups, snickers, Toblerone

Unique Ways to Use Edible Sugar Cookie Dough

  • Make cookie dough truffles- All you have to do roll them into balls, freeze them, and then dip in the melted chocolate of your choice. Refrigerate the truffles until they have hardened up and are easy to eat. This is great for holiday cookie trays and boxes.
  • Turn it into a gift- Prepare the Edible Sugar Cookie Dough and place it in a cute jar or container. Tie a ribbon around it and attach a spoon to it. You can even make a cute gift tag that says something like “you are the sugar to my cookie” and directions for making it again on their own.
  • Add it to ice cream- Who doesn’t like cookie dough ice cream?!
  • Use it on your sweet treats- Spread it out on top of cooled brownies, cupcakes, as a cake filling layer, to top no bake cheesecakes or pies, etc. The list goes on and on.
  • Make it a dip- All you have to do is add a block of cream cheese and a tub of whipped cream topping (after the edible cookie dough is prepped) to make a delicious Edible Sugar Cookie Dough dip!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Is it safe to eat sugar cookie dough?

Normally no, but with this recipe yes! Because there is no eggs and the flour is heat treated, there are virtually no harmful bacteria which could make you sick. It is completely safe to serve to anyone!

Can I cook this Edible Sugar Cookie Dough?

Short answer is yes, but I do not recommend it. There are no leavening agents or eggs to give them a fluffy, chewy, consistency. They would turn out crunchier and a little more dense than normal.

Can I made Edible Sugar Cookie Dough vegan?

YES! All you have to do is use plant butter, non dairy milk, and cane sugar. The other ingredients are completely vegan.

How do I heat treat flour for edible cookie dough?

Heat treating flour can be done in the stove or in the microwave. All you have to do is measure out the amount you need and microwave it in four, 15 second intervals (stirring between each). Or spread the flour on a baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes at 350°F (stirring halfway through).

I didn’t know that cookie dough could be eaten by itself because I thought it wasn’t safe to eat! But then since I’ve seen from your procedure like heat treating the flour to kill any potentially harmful bacteria, and all, I thought “hmm, since it’s heat treated, it would be safe to eat already.” And so out of curiosity, I proceeded to try this sugar cookie dough recipe of yours. I’m amazed coz it’s really addicting, I ate all the ones that I made without sharing coz I so much like the taste and texture! Really buttery flavor! On the other hand, I feel just fine too. This will be the first one on my list of edible cookie dough recipes, thank you for sharing 🙂

The almond extract is what made me fall in love with this cookie dough. Any time it’s added to baked goods (or unbaked in this case) it just elevates the taste to a whole new desserty level. This is so good it’s dangerous! I love the idea to add it to ice cream and I’m going to try that next time I make it.

As a kid I always ate the cookie dough. And as an adult I still like to scrape the spoon clean. But I never let my kids do it 😂
I am always telling them it is bad for them.

So when I saw this I thought it was perfect.
They LOVED it!!! We made truffles like you suggested and they took them to share with friends.

My eldest daughter is now having friends over next weekend so they can make a batch, mix it with ice cream and watch a movie.

They were all so happy 😀

This sugar cookie dough was fabulous! It was perfectly sugary without being overpoweringly sweet. I made it to put on top of ice cream but very little made it to dessert! haha
